PDF packages • Linux command line • One config file

Assemble finished PDF packages from one config file.

PageClerk merges your PDFs and images, adds bookmarks, page numbers, headers, logos and signatures, and generates the cover, contents, index and transmittal pages. It runs the same way every time, from a terminal, a script or a cron job.

Version 0.1.1 Beta for Linux x86_64 (glibc 2.28+: RHEL/Rocky/Alma 8+, Debian 10+, Ubuntu 20.04+). No Python needed.

What it does

The paperwork step, automated.

Submittals, reports, contracts and closeout packages: describe the package once and rebuild it whenever an input changes. See every feature.

01

Merge and organize

  • PDFs and images in order, with globs and page ranges
  • Nested bookmarks from groups and file names
  • Divider pages, rotation and page size handling
02

Mark every page

  • Page numbers, headers and footers with tokens
  • Logos, watermarks, QR codes and barcodes
  • Signatures placed at [[ANCHOR]] text
03

Generate the extras

  • Cover, table of contents and index pages
  • Transmittal letters from your variables
  • Batch mode, JSON reports and dry runs for scripts

Every feature

Everything in PageClerk 0.1.1.

All of it is included in the free trial.

Assembling

Build the package

  • PDFs and images (JPG, PNG, TIFF) in order, by name, wildcard or nested group
  • Choose pages per file, rotate pages, fit images to the page
  • Leave out empty pages
  • Open password-protected PDFs and repair damaged ones
  • Flatten form fields or keep them fillable
Bookmarks

Navigate it

  • One bookmark per file, from its file name, PDF title or your own text
  • Nested groups, e.g. Specifications → Concrete → sections
  • Keep, nest or drop each file's own bookmarks
Generated pages

Add the paperwork

  • Cover page from your PDF template with named fields, or a built-in layout
  • Table of contents from the bookmarks or your own rows, with dot leaders
  • Index of your terms and aliases, with page numbers
  • Transmittal letter with a document table: number, title, revision, pages, SHA-256
  • Divider pages before each group
Page marks

Mark every page

  • Page numbers in any format: Page {n} of {total}, ABC-000123
  • Headers and footers with text, images, a rule and tokens like {section} and {date}
  • Logos, images, QR codes and barcodes at named positions, exact boxes or anchor text
  • Signatures placed on [[ANCHOR]] text, paper background removed from photos and scans, optional caption
  • Watermarks: diagonal or angled text, behind or over the content
Output

Finish it properly

  • Document title, author, subject and keywords
  • How it opens: side panel, zoom, page layout and first page
  • Byte-identical output for identical inputs
  • Strict mode, and limits on file size and page count
Scripting

Automate it

  • Inputs from the YAML job file, --input FILE:BOOKMARK options, or a text list (stdin works)
  • ${variables} from the job file, a vars file, the environment or --var; --set overrides any setting
  • batch: one package per row of a CSV or JSON file, several at once
  • Dry runs, JSON reports and logs, fixed exit codes, output to stdout
Commands

Quick jobs too

  • merge, number and stamp for one-off jobs without a job file
  • inspect shows pages, bookmarks, form fields and anchors
  • validate checks a job without writing anything
  • init creates starter projects: submittal, report, contract, minimal
  • prep-signature cleans up a signature photo
